Since the SARS-CoV-2 first reported in Wuhan, China in late December 2019, the virus is continuously evolving and spreading across the world with some strain being more contagious than its ancestors.

To understand its evolution in real time, Nextstrain team is using the publicly available SARS-CoV-2 genomic data and analyzing it phylogenetically on a global and continental level. With the 3913 genomic samples mapped, 12 varieties of SARS-CoV-2 have been identified across the globe. Its fascinating to watch how the strains are evolving and spreading across the world.
